Snus Preise in der Schweiz

Snus is a popular oral tobacco product that is often used as an alternative to traditional cigarettes. With the increasing popularity and newly introduced tobacco taxes, the prices of the products have also changed several times. Here you can find out how high the prices for snus are in Switzerland and what price changes you should be prepared for in the future.

What are the average snus prices in Switzerland?

Snus was legalised in Switzerland in 2019, both for sale and consumption. The reason for this is the lower health risks posed by oral tobacco. Unlike cigarettes, snus is not burnt and also contains far fewer toxic substances.

Snus prices in Switzerland vary greatly depending on the brand and manufacturer. There are also significant differences between snus sold in kiosks and online products. Snus at kiosks can be almost twice as expensive as in online shops or specialised snus shops and the range is also limited.

In Switzerland, snus cans cost an average of CHF 3 to CHF 6 online. At kiosks, the price is usually between CHF 8 and CHF 10. There are around 24 pouches in a can, so the unit price is between CHF 0.13 and CHF 0.41 per pouch. Classic cigarettes cost around CHF 3.50 during special promotions and CHF 9.50 for more expensive brands. The reference price is CHF 8.80, as this is the average price for the best-selling brands. This means that a packet of 20 cigarettes has a unit price of around CHF 0.44. This comparison clearly shows that you can save far more money with snus in the long term.

Is it worth buying large packs of snus in terms of price?

Large packs are generally cheaper than individual tins, so you can benefit financially. At Snushus, we offer value packs, such as our Hus Mix with four to five different flavours. We also offer 500 g boxes for some varieties, which are significantly cheaper than tins and last much longer.

What is the situation in neighbouring countries?

In the EU countries, the sale of snus is still illegal, but its consumption is not. Sweden is an exception, as it is the country of origin of the small nicotine pouches.

It is striking that Sweden has an extremely low smoking rate, namely less than 10 %. The Swedish government has announced that taxes on snus will be reduced in 2023. The price of snus is to become around 3 kronor cheaper per can at the end of 2024, while cigarette prices will be raised by 4 kronor per pack. With these measures, the government aims to further reduce the smoking rate and make Sweden the first country to go smoke-free in the future. On average, the price of snus in Sweden is around 25 to 40 kroner (equivalent to around CHF 3.12 to CHF 5).

What developments are foreseeable for snus prices in Switzerland?

In Switzerland, the Federal Council has decided to increase taxes on certain tobacco products in 2023. This affects roll-your-own cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos and oral tobacco such as snus. On average, consumers will have to pay 40 centimes more for these products from 1 January 2025.

The price increase was introduced with the aim of balancing the federal budget. The Federal Council anticipates revenue of around CHF 45 million next year. The price of classic cigarettes will remain unchanged, as the Federal Council already levies the highest possible tax rate on these products.

Snus prices in Switzerland

Snus prices in Switzerland are on average cheaper than those of cigarettes. Above all, you can save a lot of money if you buy snus either online or in snus shops. Snus in kiosks costs almost twice as much and the selection is very limited. In the future, there will be a slight price increase in Switzerland, as the Federal Council is increasing the tobacco tax on selected products. In Sweden, on the other hand, the price of snus is being reduced to encourage more people to switch from cigarettes to snus.
